Abuse: Benedict XVI expresses his shame, his pain and sincerely asks for forgiveness!

In a letter addressed to the faithful of the diocese of Munich, the Pope emeritus speaks of pedophilia in the Church, drawing inspiration from the words "mea maxima culpa" of the Mass: "we ourselves are drawn into this very great fault when we are not facing it with the necessary determination and responsibility”.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is intervening, directly and personally, to speak out on the report of abuses committed in the Diocese of Munich and Freising, Germany, of which he was Archbishop for less than five years. He does so in a writing with a penitential tone, which contains his personal “confession” expressing his “pain for the abuses and errors that have occurred during the time of my mandate in the respective places”.

In the first part of the letter , Joseph Ratzinger says he lived "days of soul-searching and reflection" after the publication of the report. He thanks the many people who expressed their closeness to him as well as those who collaborated with him to read the documentation and prepare the answers sent to the commission. As he has already done in recent days, he once again apologizes for the absolutely involuntary error concerning his presence at the meeting of January 15, 1980, during which it was decided to welcome into the diocese a priest who had to be taken care of. It is also said“particularly grateful for the trust, support and prayers that Pope Francis has expressed to me personally”.
