Abuse: financial compensation, a restorative materiality!

In almost three months, the Church of France has put in place a comprehensive mechanism for the recognition and reparation of victims of abuse through an endowment fund, topped up by bishops, dioceses and the faithful who so wish, and a support body for victims, the Inirr. The endowment fund has already reached the sum of 20 million euros.

Nearly three months after the assembly of the bishops of France in the Marian city of the Pyrenees, which saw some of them fall to their knees to ask for forgiveness, where is the battery of historic resolutions voted in plenary assembly? The two most tangible organizations, the Selam endowment fund and the Inirr - Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation - have been set up. The first, already operational, is used to raise funds to compensate victims of abuse, the second to support victims in their process of legal, psychological and social recognition. The spirit of this system is that of restorative justice commensurate with the dramas experienced. 


A triple mission endowment fund

“If it is unthinkable to repair the irreparable, financial compensation can mark the materiality of a decision and represent a space for mediation. It is not possible to repair such damage in the life of a person, but it is possible to materialize the recognition and act the will to repair as much as possible the evil committed ", thus advances Mgr Dominique Blanchet, bishop of Créteil (Val-de-Marne) and vice-president of the conference of bishops of France.

For this, the CEF has set itself a first step through the Selam fund, created before the summer of 2021 and whose publication of the Sauvé report has changed the object and the timetable. The mission is threefold: to find the financial means to support the victims in this work of recognition and reparation; remember to raise awareness of this tragedy; organize and train the Church in prevention.
